Using the sun to generate electric power is called photovoltaic technology. Photo means light and voltaic means electric. Photovoltaic cells (solar cells) are used to convert the sunlight directly into electricity. Even though the sun is 150 million kilometers away from the earth, it is extremely powerful. The sun sends so much energy to the earth that one minute's worth of sunlight could provide a whole year of electricity.

So why don't we use the sun to supply all of our power? Well, in order to properly harness the sunlight for enough electric energy, we would need solar power stations.
